Inspiring the Next Generation: Welcoming Work Experience Student Ellison to Team Lake

This summer, we were delighted to welcome Ellison Weston to Lake Chemicals & Minerals for a week of work experience with our Innovation Services (LIS) team.

At 17, Ellison is currently studying A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and is considering a future career in science. During his placement, he had the opportunity to spend time with members of our innovation teams in the labs, gaining first-hand insight into the people, processes and technologies that support scientific innovation across the business.

Throughout the week, Ellison explored how ideas progress from concept through to development, while also learning about the vital role our labs play in testing, analysis and new product development. The placement provided exposure not only to technical work but also to the wider commercial environment that enables scientific solutions to reach customers and markets.

"Before coming to Lake, I knew I enjoyed science at school, but I wasn't sure what a career in the industry might actually look like. This experience gave me the chance to see science in action and learn from people working in different roles. It helped me understand how many opportunities there are within the sector and has made me even more excited about pursuing a career in science in the future."

Supporting young people as they explore future career paths is an important part of what we do. By providing hands-on exposure to STEM careers, we hope to inspire the next generation of scientists, innovators and problem-solvers.

Dr Ann-Helen Lu, Innovation Services Manager, who hosted Ellison during the week, reflected on the placement:

"Ellison approached the week with enthusiasm, curiosity and a genuine willingness to learn. It was fantastic to see him engaging with the team, asking thoughtful questions and taking such an interest in the work we do. We are passionate about supporting young people who are considering careers in STEM, and it was a pleasure to give Ellison an insight into the opportunities that science can offer.”

We would like to thank everyone across the business who took the time to share their knowledge and experiences during the week. We wish Ellison every success with his studies and look forward to seeing where his passion for science takes him next.
